What RDP is
Redispersible polymer powder is a polymer emulsion that has been spray dried into a free-flowing powder. When the dry-mix is wetted, the powder redisperses into its original emulsion. As the mortar cures, the polymer forms a film through the cement matrix and at the interface with the substrate and tile.
Most construction RDP is based on vinyl acetate and ethylene (VAE). Other chemistries exist for specific jobs, including hydrophobic grades for water repellency and acrylic types for some coatings.
What it does in a mortar
Cement on its own is strong but brittle, and it bonds poorly to dense surfaces such as porcelain tile. RDP adds adhesion, flexibility and cohesion. In practice that means higher tensile adhesion after water immersion and heat ageing, the ability to absorb movement from thermal cycling, and better abrasion and crack resistance.
In the Gulf, heat ageing performance matters. A facade or roof tile can swing through 40 degrees between noon and night. The polymer film is what lets the adhesive bed follow that movement without debonding.
RDP and the EN 12004 tile adhesive classes
EN 12004 classifies cementitious tile adhesives as C1 (normal, tensile adhesion of at least 0.5 N/mm²) or C2 (improved, at least 1.0 N/mm²), with optional E (extended open time), T (reduced slip) and S1 or S2 (deformable) ratings. The RDP dose is the main lever for moving from C1 to C2 and from C2 to S1.

These are ranges seen in published formulations, not a validated recipe. Cement type, filler grading and the cellulose ether you pair it with all shift the right number.
What drives RDP price
Buyers often ask for an RDP price per kg without the grade, which makes the number meaningless. Price moves with polymer type and ethylene content, minimum film forming temperature, protective colloid and anti-caking system, origin, and freight. We quote against your application and volume so the comparison is like for like.
VAE copolymer powders are usually classified under HS heading 3905.29. Your customs broker should confirm the code for each shipment.
Storage in a hot climate
RDP can cake if it is stored hot and humid or stacked too high. Keep bags dry, out of direct sun and off the floor, and use stock in rotation. Check the shelf life on the TDS for the specific grade.

How much RDP goes into a tile adhesive?

What is VAE powder?
VAE powder is a redispersible polymer powder made from a vinyl acetate and ethylene copolymer. It is the most common RDP chemistry in construction dry-mix mortars.
